A Love Letter to My Son

A Love Letter on Your 4th Birthday

My Graham Boy.  My Love Bug.  As I sit here writing this on the eve of your forth birthday, I’m reminded of that special night four years ago.  It was a Friday night, two full weeks and a day before your due date.  I was giving your big sister, who was not even 15 months old at the time, a bath in our master bathroom of our Falls Church, VA townhouse.  I was leaning over the bathtub when I felt my water break, although I had no idea what was really happening at the time.  I couldn’t imaging you’d be arriving so soon when you weren’t due until the 16th.  But by early Saturday morning, you had made an appearance.

Fast forward four years.  You are a little brother and a big brother.  You are my middle baby.  You have opened my eyes and my heart to the world of little boys.  You love running and jumping, superheros and villains, cars and trains, mud and dirt.  Oh how you love playing in dirt!  But you also have a heart of gold.  You share easily and willingly your toys, your treats, anything and everything with your siblings and friends.  You are Lucy’s loyal playmate and you allow her to boss you around for hours.  You have a love affair with milk.  You request your “Big Milk” multiple times a day and because of you we go through about 4 gallons a week as a family!  Whenever I leave the house you come running to me asking for “Hug, Kiss, Hug, Kiss” and sweetly ask me “Mommy, will you come back?”.

Every morning you do a Ninja dance for Lucy’s school bus driver and all the children on the bus.  When we visit the grocery store, you beg to visit the lobsters and to sit in the race car shopping cart.  Every morning for the past week you have climbed into my bed and asked me, “Mommy, is today my birthday?”.  As every Mommy knows, it is bittersweet watching you grow up, but mostly it is sweet.  I can’t imagine our family without you and the joy you bring to us everyday.  Happy 4th Birthday, sweet boy!  I look forward to another fun and exciting year watching you grow!  I love you, Graham.

Side Note: The final image is how Graham really feels about having his Birthday photo taken 🙂
