Documentary Family Sessions: 5 Reason Why You Need One!

Documentary Family Sessions: 5 Reason Why You Need One!

I get it—it’s tough to step outside your comfort zone, especially when you’re used to family portraits looking a certain way. But today, I want to share why a documentary family photography session will be so meaningful in the long run. If you’re a family in NY State’s Capital Region, here is why you should book a documentary session with me!

1. You can stop stressing about the kids acting out or misbehaving, or your partner’s bad mood.

I will not be asking your family to pose, sit still, look at the camera, “stand over there”, say “cheese”, smile, etc. This is simply your life, documented. We will plan a few everyday activities that your family already does regularly and enjoys and I’ll be there as a friend who just happens to have her camera with her!

2. You don’t have to dress up during your Documentary Session.

Wear what you want, wear what’s comfortable, wear what makes you feel like you! We’ll be in your backyard or in your home – kids can wear princess dresses, superhero capes, bathing suits, or just their diapers!

 3. Authentic emotions are accepted and celebrated, ALL OF THEM!

Your gallery will be full of real emotions and a lot of them. Real laughs, real smiles, real love. Maybe a few grumpy faces, maybe a few tears. It’s all acceptable and all cherished.

4. Your Documentary Session tells your family’s story.

Your family’s story is always changing. Maybe you are about to welcome a new baby, or move into a new home; maybe the grandparents are visiting or your youngest is about to hit a new milestone. Or maybe nothing extra special is going on. Your family’s everyday routine will look different today than it will a year from now and your current chapter deserves to be documented.

5. Real memories will be made.

In a documentary session, we’ll capture authentic family memories. Beforehand, we’ll plan a few activities your family loves to do—whether it’s making pancakes for breakfast, playing frisbee in the backyard, drawing with chalk on the driveway, or walking to the local playground—and that’s what we’ll photograph. When you look back on the photos, you’ll be reminded of how special these moments were to your family.
