Everything You Need to Know About What to Wear for Family Photos This Fall

Wondering what to wear for family photos? Choosing outfits is one of the biggest parts of planning your session, but it doesn’t have to feel stressful. With a little planning, you can choose clothes that feel like you and look beautiful in your photographs.

Fall is one of my favorite times for family sessions. The warm colors, cooler weather, and golden light create the perfect setting for authentic family moments. The right outfits help bring everything together, but they should never take attention away from the people in the photographs. Instead, your clothing should help tell your family’s story while keeping everyone comfortable and confident.

Before we dive in, welcome! I’m Meg, an Albany family photographer serving families throughout the Capital Region, including Saratoga Springs, Bethlehem, and Niskayuna. One of the questions I hear most often is, “What should we wear?” The good news is that choosing outfits doesn’t have to be stressful. I’ll help you every step of the way so your family looks coordinated, feels comfortable, and can focus on what matters most: spending time together. If you’re ready to plan your fall family session, I’d love to help you create photographs that tell your family’s story. Reach out to book your session.

Now, here’s everything you need to know about what to wear for family photos this fall.

Why What You Wear Matters for Fall Family Photos

Your outfits play a big role in the overall feel of your photographs. They don’t have to be fancy or expensive. Instead, they should help create a timeless look that lets your family’s connection shine.

When everyone feels comfortable in what they’re wearing, it shows. Parents relax. Kids can run, play, and snuggle without feeling restricted. That creates the natural smiles and genuine moments that make family photographs so meaningful.

Think of your clothing as part of the story. Soft textures, cozy sweaters, and earthy colors fit beautifully with the season while helping your family stand out against the colorful fall leaves.

If you’re unsure what to wear for family photos, remember this simple rule. Choose outfits that feel like you on your very best day.

The Best Colors to Wear for Fall Family Pictures

Fall already gives us plenty of color, so your outfits should work with the scenery instead of competing with it.

Some of my favorite colors for fall family sessions include:

  • Rust
  • Olive green
  • Mustard
  • Cream
  • Camel
  • Dusty blue
  • Burgundy
  • Forest green
  • Warm brown
  • Soft gray
  • Navy

These colors complement the changing leaves and create a warm, timeless look.

Neutrals also work beautifully. Cream, tan, oatmeal, and soft gray give your photographs a light and classic feel. Then you can add one or two richer accent colors throughout your family’s outfits. Texture also makes a difference. Knit sweaters, linen dresses, corduroy, denim, chunky cardigans, and cozy scarves add depth without feeling busy.

When deciding what to wear for family photos, try laying everyone’s outfits on your bed together. If one piece immediately grabs all your attention, it may be too bold for the rest of the group.

How to Coordinate Outfits Without Matching

Gone are the days when everyone wore identical white shirts and jeans. Instead of matching, think about coordinating.

Start by choosing one outfit you love. Many families begin with mom’s outfit because it often has the most color and texture. Then build everyone else’s clothing around those colors.

Choose a color palette with three or four colors that work well together. Mix solids with subtle patterns instead of dressing everyone in the exact same thing.

For example:

  • Mom wears a cream sweater with a rust-colored skirt.
  • Dad wears a navy sweater with khaki pants.
  • One child wears an olive dress.
  • Another child wears a cream knit sweater with brown overalls.

Notice that the colors repeat throughout the family without looking identical. Balance is important, too. If someone wears a floral dress, let everyone else wear mostly solids so the pattern doesn’t compete for attention.

When families ask me what to wear for family photos, this is often my biggest piece of advice. Coordinate instead of matching. It creates photographs that feel natural and timeless.

Choosing Clothes That Are Comfortable for Kids

Happy kids make happy family photographs.

Children don’t enjoy wearing itchy fabrics, stiff collars, or shoes that hurt their feet. If they’re uncomfortable, you’ll probably see it in the photographs. Instead, choose clothing that lets them move, explore, and play.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Choose soft fabrics.
  • Make sure clothes fit well without being too tight.
  • Let little ones wear shoes they can safely walk in.
  • Avoid outfits they’ll constantly pull at or adjust.
  • Dress them in layers if the weather might change.

It’s also helpful to let older children have some input. Giving them two outfit choices instead of one helps them feel included while still keeping your vision together.

I always plan family sessions with movement in mind. We’ll play games, snuggle, walk together, and let kids be kids. Comfortable clothing helps everyone enjoy the experience instead of worrying about their outfit.

What to Avoid Wearing for Your Fall Family Session

Knowing what to wear for family photos also means knowing what to avoid. Large logos pull attention away from your family’s faces. Neon colors can reflect onto skin and don’t blend well with natural surroundings.

Tiny stripes or busy patterns may distract from the connection between family members. Clothing with words or large graphics often dates photographs more quickly than simple, classic pieces.

It’s also best to avoid everyone wearing solid black. While black can work for one person, an entire family dressed in black can feel heavy against a colorful fall landscape.

If you’re wearing brand-new shoes or clothing, try them on before session day. Walk around the house, sit down, pick up your child, and make sure everything feels comfortable. A little preparation goes a long way.

Outfit Inspiration for Moms, Dads, and Little Ones

Need a little inspiration? Here are a few outfit combinations that photograph beautifully during fall.

For Moms

Flowy dresses with knit cardigans are always a favorite. Sweater dresses, midi skirts, or jeans paired with a cozy sweater also create beautiful movement and texture. Choose comfortable shoes you can easily walk in, especially if your session takes place in a field or park.

For Dads

Keep it simple. Henleys, knit sweaters, button-down shirts, and well-fitting jeans or chinos work wonderfully. Layering with a lightweight jacket or vest can also add texture without looking bulky.

For Babies and Toddlers

Soft knit rompers, simple dresses, cozy sweaters, overalls, and neutral leggings all photograph beautifully. Bare feet can also be adorable if the weather allows.

For Older Kids

Choose clothing that lets their personality shine while staying within your family’s color palette. Simple dresses, sweaters, button-down shirts, leggings, and comfortable boots are all great choices.

Most importantly, remember that your family doesn’t have to look perfect. Real smiles, warm hugs, and playful moments are always more memorable than perfectly styled outfits.

Final Tips for Looking and Feeling Your Best on Session Day

By now, you probably feel much more confident about what to wear for family photos.

A few final tips can make your session even smoother:

  1. Lay everyone’s outfits out a few days before your session. This gives you time to steam clothing, replace anything that doesn’t fit, or make small changes.
  2. Keep accessories simple. A favorite hat, delicate jewelry, or a cozy blanket can add personality without taking over the photographs.
  3. Don’t forget to dress for the weather. Fall temperatures can change quickly, especially here in Upstate NY. Layers help everyone stay comfortable throughout your session.
  4. Most importantly, remember that your photographs aren’t about perfect outfits. They’re about your family exactly as you are right now.

Years from now, your children won’t remember whether your sweater was the perfect shade of cream. They’ll remember how you laughed together, held hands, chased falling leaves, and wrapped each other in big hugs.

If you’re still wondering what to wear for family photos, don’t worry. I’ll help guide you every step of the way, from choosing outfits to finding the perfect location. My goal is to make your session relaxed, playful, and full of genuine connection so you can focus on what matters most: loving your people.
